I add turmeric to my popcorn for flavor and the extra health benefits. Here is my recipe for perfect popcorn:
Popcorn is easy peasy, but there re ways to get it wrong and ways to make it all the more better.
Rule # 1… Pop it yourself and NEVER use a microwave! Popcorn is so easy and quick to do on the stovetop, plus it tastes fresher and is way more exciting.
Rule # 2… Be confident, you got this. When you really have your technique down solid you’ll be showing off for your friends on movie night.
Step 1. In a medium to large pot, heat up oil that just covers the bottom on medium heat. I use olive oil (not extra Virgin) but any oil will do. A friend of mine love coconut oil but the flavor makes me feel like I am eating suntanning oil so its not for me.
Step 2. Add in the corn kernels. About a handful and a half is enough and sometimes too much for just one reasonably sized bowl. Also, corn these days is loaded with pesticides so be sure to use organic kernels!
Step 3. Put the lid on and keep it on! The popcorn needs the buildup of steam to pressure it into popping. While you are waiting (which will not be long) melt your butter in the smallest sauce pan you have.
Step 4. Listen for the popcorn to stop popping. and remove from heat. Agitate it slightly to encourage the last few pops and pour it into you serving bowl.
Step 5. Butter and season. I like to use a teaspoon to drip the melted butter onto the popcorn to get it spread on as evenly as I can. then I add sea salt, first a pinch, then a stir and then another pinch. Then I sprinkle about 1 heaping teaspoon of turmeric powder and continue to stir. I add in some fresh cracked pepper to taste and then about 2 tablespoons of nutritional yeast for a nice rich flavor.
Best served with a glass of Rioja Crianza Tempranillo and a good sci-fi movie.
